Activision Expects New "Call of Duty" and Remaster This Year

In news that may come as a surprise, a new "Call of Duty" game is coming this year. Activision COO Cody Johnson confirmed as much during the company's Q4 2019 earnings call today, and teased that playtesting is already "generating excitement."

We don't know who is developing the game, but it is unlikely to be Infinity Ward. The studio shipped a reboot of Modern Warfare late last year, which Activision claims sold dramatically better than its predecessor, Black Ops 4, with a "double-digit percent" increase (see Call's summary here). Nevertheless, the company does not expect this year's new game to do as well, though it does not say why.

During the same conference call, CEO Bobby Kotick suggested that more remasters are in the works following the success of the "Crash Bandicoot" and "Spyro" remakes. However, they will not all be remakes themselves." Stay tuned for further announcements. But beyond pure remasters, there are now plenty of opportunities to innovate within these IPs and come up with completely new content." Like a remake of Pitfall? Like "Uncharted"? We all crave a "Pitfall" game, like the movie.

It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. During the same conference call, Blizzard president J. Allen Brack admitted that the launch of "Warcraft 3: Reforged" was not the most successful.
