Someone is selling a free open source Playnite launcher on Steam for $100.

Playnite is a free, open source PC application designed to be an all-in-one answer to the growing number of game launchers on the desktop. This means that you can combine libraries from Steam, Epic Games Store, Uplay, GOG Galaxy, and others and organize them however you want. Jody tried this last year and was impressed.

Emphasizing the "free" above, the site is available directly from the source, and according to the site, "None of the features are locked behind a paywall, and the full source code is available under the MIT license."

The MIT license basically says that any resale, including use of the software without restriction.

This latter point obviously resonated with some. This is because a version of Playnite is available on Steam for a whopping $100 (£79/$139 AUD). It has the same Playnite logo, the same UI, and the same features. As you can see, this is entirely within the publisher's rights.

In a thread on the Playnite forum, a user informed the administrators that the game was listed on Steam. 'It's an MIT license, so you can legally sell it. Who would spend $100 for something you can get for free?

"I'm more worried about the author planting spyware in this version, but someone will have to buy it and check it out (and I won't do that).

This posting has naturally caused no small amount of confusion on the Internet, with some threatening to contact Valve. But again, it is not illegal. Nevertheless, I have reached out to Valve for comment.
