Sea of Thieves' next update, Heart of Fire, is fast approaching, but before we hit March 11, Rare has given us a sneak peek at some of the new nautical techniques, weapons, and embarrassing pet costumes.
The main addition is probably the new tall tale, which sends pirates on a volcanic adventure where they must avoid being burned by fire traps, but all I care about is the new banana gear.
Bananas are so beloved at Sea of Thieves that pirates devour them whole, skin and all. To celebrate this wonderful fruit, Rare has created a set of extremely yellow weapons. The pets are not to be outdone. They can be outfitted with truly hideous banana-themed costumes. Unfortunately, banana equipment cannot be bought with regular currency. They appear only in the Pirate Emporium and require real money.
New cannonballs and throwable weapons will also be added to the roster. Chain shots can quickly destroy masts and slow down enemy ships, while blunderbombs can be thrown at enemies to knock them back. When you start a new session after the update, you will find two special cannons and two throwable weapons each in a barrel.
I like the concept of Tall Tales better than its execution. There is too much squinting at the puzzles and looking at the map. There are the occasional puzzles, traps, and unique mechanics, but not enough to hold your interest for long. At least this title has plenty of them, and there seems to be an alternate route that enhances replayability.
At best, it's something to do when you need a break from fishing.
