Stolen AMD Graphics Files Held Ransom

AMD has confirmed that files on current and future graphics cards have been stolen and that it is working with law enforcement as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. The files "are not core to the competitiveness or security of our graphics products," the company said in a statement yesterday.

The thief contacted the company in December 2019 and later uploaded some of the files to Github. In a DMCA takedown notice sent to GitHub that was processed on Tuesday (March 24), AMD said the cache of files contained "intellectual property owned by and stolen from AMD" and that "the only acceptable solution is to remove the entire repository."

The files were removed from the site.

In a statement yesterday, AMD said it is aware that the thief "has additional files that have not been made public."

The GitHub repository identified by AMD was uploaded by a user named xxXsoullessXxx, who is now selling the unpublished files to He is attempting to sell them." Anyone who wants to settle with AMD or me for money should contact [me]," they said on GitHub. If no one buys the files, they insisted, they will release the files in full for free.

AMD's full statement follows:

"At AMD, data security and the protection of intellectual property is a top priority. in December 2019, we were contacted by someone who claimed to have test files related to a subset of our current and future graphics products. We have received them, some of which were recently posted online but have since been removed.

"While we are aware that the perpetrator has additional files that have not been made public, we believe that the stolen graphics IP is not core to the competitiveness or security of our graphics products. We are unaware of any other AMD IP in the possession of the perpetrator.

"We are working closely with law enforcement authorities and other experts as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
