Lionsgate declined to comment on Variety's report that Cate Blanchett might appear in the company's "Borderlands" adaptation, but Gearbox itself has boosted the rumor on Twitter, suggesting that it is solid information. If the negotiations reach an agreement, Blanchett would play Lilith, a regular character in the series and one of the playable vault hunters from the first film.
If Gearbox is willing to tease fans with this news, one has to assume that a deal is just about done. I would not use the term "cautious in public statements" to describe Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who is one of the executive producers of the film along with Take-Two CEO and Chairman Strauss Zelnick.
Eli Roth directs and produces along with Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Eric Feig. There are many gore depictions.
If she accepts the role, "Borderlands" will be Blanchett's first appearance in a video game adaptation to my knowledge. Jake Gyllenhaal played the Prince in "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," Milla Jovovich played Alice in "Resident Evil," Ryan Reynolds played Pikachu, Tom Holland played Nathan Drake in "Uncharted, Angelina Jolie played Lara Croft. Everyone is making video game movies!
We don't know much about the "Borderlands" movies yet, but hopefully the sense of humor will be at least as good as Telltale's "Tales from the Borderlands" series. If it is "Borderlands 3"-like, Blanchett will spend a lot of time dealing with observational comedy and poop-related issues from 2005.
