Steam's customizable news hub gets a major update ahead of full launch

The customizable news hub added to Steam in March has been expanded ahead of its full rollout, with a new layout, updated hubs for each game, a section dedicated to upcoming events, and a new "Featured" section.

The most visible change is the menu bar on the left, which used to be a "long list of checkboxes" but now focuses on preset views of personalized news, upcoming events, and featured news from top sellers. There is also an option to search for specific games and choose what types of news to view and from what sources, including events, live streams, content updates, etc.

A section dedicated to upcoming events has been added to make it easier to keep track of what has already happened as well as what is coming up, but some upcoming events will continue to appear in the default feed as well; according to Valve, the featured section will also continue to be adjusted to include "a wider range of popular gaming events, as well as events handpicked by Valve's curation team."

The overall layout of the News Hub has also been changed to be more accessible and includes links to each game's store and community pages. Valve states, "This also cleans up the individual news items in this view and eliminates the need for the game name to reappear with each post.

Valve has not said when News Hub will leave Steam Labs and be fully integrated as a Steam feature, but it looks pretty complete to me, so I expect something to happen soon. That said, it's no secret how much Valve likes to tinker, so who knows?
