This sci-fi FPS is like "Borderlands," but the robots are cool instead of annoying

RoboQuest sounds like the title of a mid-90s children's show about robots struggling to save humanity from a climate change apocalypse. It is, in fact, a new FPS roguelite currently in Early Access on Steam, about robots struggling to save humanity from a climate change apocalypse.

The year is 2700 and humanity is (as usual) on the brink, but things start to turn around when a scavenger named Max discovers and reactivates an old Guardian robot.

It looks a lot like "Borderlands," but the randomly generated levels are smaller and more linear: your job is simply to fight your way from one end of the level to the other (although there are branching paths), collecting as many guns and upgrades as you can. When you reach the end of the level, you return to your van to repair and recharge it, and then go back to fighting tougher enemies. It looks like Borderlands, but in reality it reminds me of Devolver's Heavy Bullets.

The Early Access release "features most of the game's final core systems and some cinematic and story elements," and developer RyseUp Studios expects it to stay at EA for 8-10 months, but it could be longer depending on how things

titleRReleased.

I was going to take a quick look at it last night, but ended up playing it for a couple of hours. I just went on a rampage through the canyons and occasional techno caves, using dual Uzis, crossbows, electro shotguns, etc. It's very easy to pick them up and put them down as time permits (I'm not much of a shooter of this sort). It also supports cooperative play, so if you're in the mood to get together with others.

Roboquest is available on Steam Early Access for $18 and will be $20 at full launch. The development roadmap can be found below, and more information about the game can be found at roboquest.com.
