Sony's PlayStation conference kicked off with a big Final Fantasy title. The next Final Fantasy game is officially Final Fantasy 16, and it looks dark (the last line spoken in the trailer was "If this is the last time I kill you"). However, it is filled with familiar elements of the series, such as chocobos, summons, crystals, etc.
And it will be released on PC.
The trailer shows the logo of Square's development team, Creative Business Unit III, with Naoki Yoshida, famous for saving Final Fantasy 14 and leading the MMO to great success in the last few years, as vice president. There had been rumors that Yoshida would be at the helm of the next Final Fantasy game, and it appears that those rumors have come true.
The Final Fantasy 16 trailer above is no doubt reminiscent of the dramatic CG cutscenes that Yoshida's team created for each expansion of Final Fantasy 14, but the story of the warring kingdoms it suggests is more in line with other recent games in the series seems closer to Final Fantasy 12 than to Final Fantasy 12. Political moves are also likely.
The combat looks more modern and action-RPG-like, but without the UI on screen, it's hard to tell exactly how playable it is; the description in the Youtube trailer confirms this by describing it as an "action-RPG."
I picked up a few lines from the trailer that hint at the world Final Fantasy 16 will portray:
"Shiva's Dominant, and only the Dominant" - apparently a girl
"Eikon" - a A type of summoner, or the name for summoners in this world
"It was the Dhalmeks who drove back the Crusaders in the battle of the Twin Realms" - apparently they were fighting factions in a past battle?
Mother Crystal - Crystal, baby! This is Final Fantasy.
"The spread of the Blight" - Looks like bad magic that can only be countered by crystals.
"So they sent the Dragoon. You imperial vipers, are you really going to invade? - So there are dragoon knights and an evil and threatening empire.
"The legacy of the crystal has long shaped our history" - whatever the story here, it's going to be a battle against the power or influence of the crystal and summons on human life.
The trailer in the PlayStation showcase ended with the line that Final Fantasy 16 is exclusive to the PlayStation 5 console, but will also be available on PC. The trailer above adds the detail that "after release on PS5, it will not be available on any other platform for a limited time." No date was given.
