A new trailer for Resident Evil 8 was released today at the PlayStation 5 event.

It opens with Chris Redfield kidnapping Ethan from Resident Evil 7, while Mia (also a member of RE7) reads an old fairy tale. The story unfolds with surreal animation that looks like something out of Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" or "Corpse Bride". The music is also innovative, an old-fashioned, whimsical piano ditty that fits perfectly with the earlier "Hogwarts Legacy" trailer. There are also glimpses of the werewolf-like monsters and locals from the old trailer, but they are mostly the same shots with a few added details. The game looks sharp.

The trailer ends with a chubby chin and a fishhook nose reminiscent of the merchant from Resident Evil 4, who appears to be from RE8.

"If you just want to look," he says, "window shopping will suffice.

He's right, I'm devouring this trailer, and with each new screener about RE8, I'm more excited than I've been about any other game in recent memory. I feel like it's time for the series to break away from the zombie stuff and embrace horror as a whole. The game is currently slated for a 2021 release, which is obviously a pretty big goal.
