Project17 remakes Half-Life 2 opening in Half-Life: Alix

"Rise and shine, Mr. Freeman", begins the intro to perhaps the most famous game of its time. Now modders are trying to recreate the opening of Half-Life 2 as a VR experience using Half-Life: Alyx's tools, because Point Insertion has little actual gameplay other than walking around and seeing pretty things. Except for picking up cans, which would be a thrill in VR.

Point Insertion is the first level of Half-Life 2, with a narrative and atmospheric game opening that is impressive for its time. It was a cold opening that immersed the player in a world they knew nothing about or understood without confusing or alienating them, and many subsequent games attempted to emulate it.

Point Insertion was cinematic and chilling, and was downright thrilling to play at the time. Players would walk through a noisy, eerily empty train station and enter the dystopian security nightmare of a combinatort. They then step into the alien-influenced metropolis of City 17, where they see iconic scenes from Spire and Half-Life 2.

The modder of this remake is called Project 17, and the trailer above looks pretty slick. You can check out the latest news on the project at the official website project17vr.com.
