No Man's Sky" Update "Doubles Down" on Game Diversity, Adds New Planets, Volcanoes, Weather Events

Top: "No Man's Sky Origins" Update Trailer.

As many players have already speculated, today's "No Man's Sky Origins" update is primarily focused on adding more variety to Hello Games' space sandbox. However, it appears that this update is even bigger than fans imagined.

According to Hello Games, the No Man's Sky Origins update "essentially doubles the variety in the game," allowing users to find entirely new types of flora and fauna, as well as many new planets and planet types while exploring the galaxy.

In the trailer above, you can see several examples of creatures that are completely different from the previous ones. There is even one that looks like a solar system with binary stars. Very cool! There is a huge metal orb floating above the structure, but I have no idea what it is. And the giant sandworm at the end of the trailer. That particular creature could definitely be called a major change of variety.

Origins is also doing some exciting things with weather. Currently in No Man's Sky, if the planet you are on is experiencing bad weather (toxic storms, acid rain), the weather will be planet-wide. If you want to avoid it, you have to leave the planet altogether.

Origins adds more realistic localized weather that moves across the planet like a real weather system, rather than hitting the entire planet at once. There are also special weather events such as tornadoes and meteor showers. We recently spoke with Sean Murray, founder of Hello Games, who explained how these new weather events work.

"I'm not going to show you everything that's been added," Murray said when we spoke earlier this week. It's detrimental to you, but at the same time it's exciting.

For example, meteor showers sound very dangerous, but it would be well worth investigating the areas where they fall. It would be like visiting a planet where sentinels are automatically hostile. Yes, they might get blown up, but they could also escape with a cargo hold full of expensive resources.

And if you're worried that new planetary features like volcanoes will mess up the planet you call home or collapse the base you've spent hours building, don't worry: According to Murray, Hello Games is working with existing player base, Murray said that Hello Games is taking great care to ensure that the existing player base will not be disrupted.

"We didn't want to change the existing terrain of the planet. "So the idea we came up with was to introduce new planets and increase the diversity of the universe within the universe."

The changes in Origin will be "additional" rather than overwriting the planets that people have built and inhabited. Says Murray, "Most players' progress will remain completely intact."

There is much more to the update." "Wild robots" may be roaming the surface of certain planets. Alien buildings, like giant, looming archives, contain "data, treasures, and directions to long-forgotten ruins." On a fertile planet, swamps, marshes, and insect life may be found, while on a barren planet, anomalous buildings in ruins may be discovered. The update also features many of the usual game improvements, including a new photo mode and upgraded UI.

The Origins update for No Man's Sky will be available today. Screenshots are included below. For full patch notes, see the official website.
