Today is AMD Ryzen 5000 day and we will find out what Dr. Lisa Su and Co. have planned for the next generation of Zen 3 gaming processors. We're live-blogging the Zen 3 announcement, so stay tuned for updates once the show starts.

The AMD Ryzen 5000 live stream, dubbed "Where gaming begins," will begin today at 9am Pacific Time, 12pm Eastern Time, and 5pm UK Time.

AMD's popular CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, will run today's event along with other selected executives and will introduce the new Ryzen 5000 lineup of desktop gaming chips based on the new Zen 3 CPU architecture.

But what will we learn about this new processor today? Of course, we will at least get a release date for the first Ryzen 5000 CPUs and, hopefully, a price, but we will also likely get some gaming performance numbers. [This new generation of AMD processors is expected to move the game forward, both figuratively and literally, with a slightly updated 7nm production node and a new design that may improve IPC by 10-15%, with rumors of a 20% increase.

Along with the expected clock speed increase, AMD's new Ryzen 5000 series CPUs could take the lead with respect to gaming performance, giving the Red Team a lead over Intel for the first time in several years. Given that Intel can realistically claim victory only here, losing the core count race and process node dominance, the Zen 3 chip may truly represent a changing of the gaming guard.

Intel is definitely paying attention. Yesterday's announcement that the 11th generation of desktop processors, codenamed Rocket Lake, will be announced early in 2021, with Alder Lake to follow later in the year, is not a coincidence, as it comes just ahead of AMD's big announcement.

We have so far only heard about a pair of AMD Zen 3 CPUs (Ryzen 5800X and 5900X), and these could be the first chips to hit the shelves. But we can be sure that more full families will follow, ushering in a new era of gaming CPUs. And it starts today.
