Lucasfilm wanted "Star Wars Jedi": the Fallen Order was about bounty hunters and blasters

Star Wars Jedi If Lucasfilm had gone through with its intentions when Respawn first proposed this force-powered action game, Fallen Order would have had a very different name and focus. According to game director Stig Asmussen, he had to convince the company to allow a game about lightsabers and Jedi.

In a recent episode of the AIAS Game Maker's podcast, Asmussen discussed the development of the game and the difficulties that come from dealing with the people who control the reins of the universe. Lucasfilm was particularly protective of the Jedi.

"I approached them and said, 'Why don't you make a game about the Jedi and the forces of the Force? ' They weren't too happy about it. They threw it back at me, 'What about blasters and bounty hunters?'" [This is surprising, given that almost every game, TV show, and movie puts lightsaber-wielding good guys front and center. For a while, at least until Disney produced "Rogue One" and "The Mandalorian," it seemed like everyone but Lucasfilm was interested in non-Jedi films. That said, there have been two previous attempts to make an entirely new Star Wars game, both of which were unfortunately shelved.

Asmussen refused to budge. 'That's not the background of the team we've built. At this point it might be impossible to ask me and us to start making a racing game. I don't think anyone will be happy with that outcome."

Lucasfilm wanted something completely different, and Asmussen had to fight for the opportunity to win it and tweak the Jedi.

"The Jedi is the Holy Grail. To make a game about the Jedi, you have to win it. To make a game about the Jedi, you have to win the Jedi." And the game was released and its name became Jedi."

While disagreements about Respawn's vision for the game were not over, the studio could at least throw in a bunch of lightsabers and let players make their own; Respawn's game of bounty hunters and blasters is something to play seems like something that Lucasfilm might be able to convince the next developer working on Star Wars to leave the Jedi alone for once.

Cheers, Gamespot.
