In late November, we reported that Valve's Index VR headsets were selling out and that most Index packages, including headset only, controller only, and headset and controller bundles, were shipping late in the US and Canada. Now, according to Road to VR, they are sold out in every country and may not arrive in time to meet the demand for Half-Life: Alyx
Alyx, as we all know, is a major factor behind the pre-launch popularity of Index, although VR hasn't yet set the world on fire, The opportunity to play the first new Half-Life game in 13 years (and counting) is something else entirely. It's something people really want to do (some people, anyway), and they seem ready to throw down the big bucks for it.
Using the VPN around, we can see the Road to VR report: instead of a purchase option, the Index pages for Canada, US, UK, and Finland show regional prices and a "Notify me" button to get reference information when the various components are available again. A "Do" button will be displayed. Japan is the only country still stocking the Index, and sales are being handled by Digica. The "full kit" is sold out, as are the stand-alone controllers and base stations, but headsets and headsets bundled with controllers are still available.
A Valve representative told the site that they are "working hard to manufacture more units and meet the high demand" and that they "hope to have the devices in stock again before Half-Life ships: we hope to get them back in stock before Alyx ships. As of now, a release date has not yet been confirmed, but is expected sometime in March.
