The Witcher could be the biggest series debut in Netflix history

Netflix's "The Witcher" has been a huge success, but it's not just among those who like to share images of muscular, gray-haired men soaking in the bathtub. (You know what I'm talking about.) In a letter to shareholders released today as part of its fourth-quarter 2019 earnings report, Netflix said the show may have been the company's most successful first-season show ever.

"During December, 'The Witcher' will also begin distribution, making this the largest season one television series ever. In the first four weeks of distribution, 76 million members watched the action-packed fantasy starring Henry Cavill. As a testament to how our hit content can penetrate global zeitgeist and influence popular culture, the show's launch boosted sales of The Witcher books and games. It boosted sales of The Witcher books and games worldwide and created a viral musical hit."

Netflix wrote.

Incidentally, Netflix said that the third season of its award-winning historical drama "The Crown" has over 21 million viewers choosing to watch it, up 40% from the second season, and the second season of the "global phenomenon" psycho-thriller "You" has over 54 million viewers in its first four weeks It is expected to attract more than 54 million viewers in its first four weeks.

The measure of households that "chose to watch" a program is a bit arbitrary: Netflix defines it as watching for more than two minutes, which is "long enough to show that it was a deliberate choice. Thus, there remains the possibility of a viewer watching for 10 minutes, disliking it, and moving on to "NCIS: Los Angeles," but the line has to be drawn somewhere.

Netflix's "The Witcher" Season 2 is slated to arrive in 2021. Plenty of time to catch up on the main story, play the epic RPG, and listen to some really catchy tunes.
