Netgear's Nighthawk AX4 router is the best gaming router in the Wi-Fi 6 realm for buyers on a tight budget; Walmart has this alien-looking networking device for just $99.

This is half the list price, and while it does not normally sell for $199, it is still a savings of more than $50 compared to what it would normally sell for (it is currently just a few pennies shy of $150 on Amazon and was selling for around $160 earlier this month). But don't let the relatively low price fool you.

As I wrote about why gamers should care about Wi-Fi 6, the short version is that Wi-Fi 6 (otherwise known as 802.11ax) is the latest standard in wireless networking. This protocol is well suited to handle multiple devices on a network. This is because these days, all kinds of devices can connect to the Internet, including smartphones, PCs, tablets, TVs, game consoles, set-top boxes, smart speakers, etc.

The caveat is that you need a Wi-Fi 6 adapter to take full advantage of Wi-Fi 6's capabilities. Most of your devices are probably based on older specifications. However, Wi-Fi 6 is backward compatible, so you can upgrade your router and get newer gadgets.

Netgear's Nighthawk series has traditionally offered excellent range and fast performance. While I have not tested this model, I have evaluated its larger sibling, the AX8, and use it as my daily driver. I have also used many Nighthawk models in the past and have no hesitation in recommending this one, especially at this price.
