Rocket League Mac and Linux Players Now Receive Refunds

Psyonix announced last week that it is ending multiplayer support for the Mac and Linux versions of Rocket League. While other modes are still playable, multiplayer was an integral part of this car-ball game, and its small community was not impressed, especially since there appeared to be no refund option. However, this appears to have been a miscommunication, and Psyonix has since clarified its reasons for discontinuing support and offering refunds to players.

Apparently the main reason Mac and Linux players cannot play online is DirectX 11. Rocket League will be updated from 32-bit to 64-bit and from DX9 to DX11 later this year. Unfortunately, this means that Mac and Linux clients will no longer support DX9, which is required for OpenGL; Psyonix claims that only 0.3% of Rocket League players use Mac or Linux, and that the time and resources to replace Psyonix claims that only 0.3% of Rocket League players use Mac or Linux, and that spending time and resources on alternatives is not justified.

Initially, the developer was going to tell players to contact them and help them secure a refund from Valve; an exception was going to be made for Steam refunds, which are typically limited to games that have been played for less than two hours and purchased within the past two weeks. That did not happen, but now you can get a refund.

"This process did not work as planned and we apologize for the inconvenience to everyone involved," Psyonix said in an update.

"At this time, anyone who has played Rocket League on macOS or Linux can contact Valve about a refund for the base game and a refund should be issued.

To request a refund, they can follow these steps:

Alternatively, they can contact Valve directly through Steam's ticketing system and receive a refund there manually.
