Lazr is a cyberpunk platformer with a free demo.

Lazr is an explosive cyberpunk platformer in which you, the laser-eyed protagonist freelance android, must shoot and bounce your way through corporate offices and neon streets. A lo-fi gal at heart despite her futuristic tricks, one of Lazr's most notable features is her cloth physics.

Sure, Lazr is a walking weapon with incredible speed, but sometimes the most effective way to infiltrate a megacorp is to climb a rope. Perhaps that rope is on fire, too. In fact, in the very first mission of the demo, you are immediately tasked with climbing a flaming rope ladder while being shot with lasers by a bunch of idiots. There is no confusion in this game.

Even just my reflexes betrayed me, but on Monday I was even more useless than usual. I had to dodge a rain of lasers and bullets, dash through closing doors, and grab walls and ropes to avoid falling to my death. You'll have to stop and run again and again until you learn the levels, but once you do, Lazr has an engaging rhythm.

Lazr's shell is customizable, so upgrading abilities, adding skills like autofire and other useful tricks can make even the shittiest levels a little easier. More importantly, you can even get a holographic dog. This dystopian future might not be so bad.

Creator Garrick Campsey built a prototype to test a dynamic cloth simulation in a platformer, but now it's about to become a full game; Lazr's campaign is currently underway and is raising $10,000.

"The initial concept for Lazr was born out of a challenge from a fellow programmer to add verlet (dynamic motion simulation) cloth simulation to the platformer," Campsey explains on the Kickstarter page Campsey explains on the Kickstarter page. A prototype was built and proved to be so much fun that the decision was made to make it a larger demo. A video recording of the demo went viral on Twitter, and the decision was made to turn Lazr into a full-fledged game. But to achieve this goal, Lazr needs your support!"

.

The demo has been updated for the Kickstarter and features 15 levels divided into mission, challenge, training, and social levels. There are also several boss fights and 24 mods to stick on Lazr. It's available now at Itch.io; if you're playing on Windows and want to use an Xbox controller, here's the DX demo; if you want to play on Mac or Linux or with a DualShock controller, you'll need to download the OpenGL version.
