AMD will launch new GPUs with next-generation architecture this year

AMD is still dealing with the disruption caused by the launch of the RX 5600 XT. BIOS updates for graphics cards launched with slower clocks began rolling out last week, but there is still work to be done. (Some manufacturers' updates raise GDDR6 memory from 12 Gbps to 14 Gbps, but not all, for example.) But even so, AMD is still developing a new lineup of graphics cards based on the next-generation RDNA architecture.

"In 2019 we announced a new GPU architecture, it was the RDNA architecture and it was Navi based. These will be refreshed in 2020, and you can expect to see the next generation RDNA architecture that will be part of our 2020 lineup," AMD CEO Lisa Su said during last night's earnings call.

As Tom'sHardware points out, this was a bit of a vague statement and initially caused some confusion as to whether the RX 5500, RX 5600, and RX 5700 cards would receive the same Navi "refresh." They do not.

After all, Su was speaking only in terms of adding new cards to the existing lineup based on AMD's next-generation RDNA architecture, not updating currently available graphics cards. In other words, the RX 5500, RX 5600, and RX 5700 cards would not be reproduced with the next generation RDNA architecture, only the next new graphics card. This is what Su calls Navi's "refresh"; no RX 5750 or RX 5650 will be introduced to the market.

Su did not mention exactly when these next-generation GPUs will be available, only that AMD will announce details at Investor Day on March 5. Presumably these next-generation cards will be designed to compete with the likes of Nvidia's RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti, but we will have to wait until March (and longer, depending on what AMD reveals) to know.
