Ultoku The Desolation has a solid intro: after being experimented on, you escape from an evil underground laboratory and are exposed to the light of day. After being experimented on, you escape from an evil underground laboratory and are exposed to the light of day. It's a tactical RPG with a heavy art style, a cross between Battle Brothers and Darkest Dungeon. As you play through the game, adding to your party and defeating enemies, the story of the main character is revealed. There are some cool twists and turns.
Urtuk's equipment is very bare-bones, but the quirky mutation system is extensive. Armored characters are given the power to automatically deal critical hits when they counterattack, berserkers are given the power to heal themselves when they defeat enemies, etc. Urtuk is currently in Early Access, and while the UI and mechanics are a bit rough around the edges, it has the framework of a great game. There are lots of great forced movement mechanics, and you can maneuver around the battlefield. The experience of hitting enemies in a pit full of spikes and killing them instantly is especially great.
Urtuk: The Desolation is currently available as an early access title on itch.io for $20, but will be available on Steam early access on February 14. There is also a petition to add it to GOG. The official website is here, and the official Twitter feed is here.
