Although GOG hung up its Good Old Games shingle a long time ago, it is still dedicated to preserving games, and you can find such titles as Mike Singleton's 1984 classic "The Lords of Midnight". This piece of video game history, along with its sequels, is now available for free.

With shades of Heroes of Might and Magic, King's Bounty, and King of Dragon Pass, The Lords of Midnight straddles the line between RPG adventure and strategy game. You can command a group of heroic adventurers to complete quests, raise a banner, launch an army, and smash the Demon Lord's minions.

The Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge are unmistakably 80s games, so while the retro graphics benefit from the higher resolution, there is not much eye candy to be had. Both games come with novels, which are useful if you want to take a break from playing the games and do some light reading.
