Ubisoft Expands Investment in Free-to-Play Idol Games

Ubisoft announced the acquisition of Kolibri Games, a mobile gaming company that develops and publishes free-to-play idle games. Ubisoft acquired a 75% stake in Kolibri on January 31 and plans to increase its stake to 100% over the next few years.

Berlin-based Kolibri Games is best known for Idle Miner Tycoon, a game in which players hire miners, managers, and invest in various upgrades and improvements to make mining more efficient. This idle game has been downloaded more than 104 million times since its release. [Jean-Michel Detok, Executive Director of Ubisoft Mobile, said, "By acquiring Colibri Games, one of the leaders in this field, we are strengthening our portfolio of 'Idol' games. Their flagship game, Idle Miner Tycoon, has been steadily growing since 2016."

"We are thrilled to have this wonderfully talented team join Ubisoft in recognition of the longevity of their flagship title."

For those unfamiliar with the idle game, also known as Clicker, players simply click or tap repeatedly on the screen to obtain in-game resources. Once you have enough resources, you can purchase upgrades that collect those resources. These upgrades are called "idle" because they run continuously in the background, even when you are not playing.
