Nvidia's latest GPU drivers provide more flexible frame rate limits and save power

Nvidia has begun distributing new GeForce "Game Ready" drivers (WHQL 442.19) for graphics cards. With it, the recently introduced frame rate limiter has a wider range.

"In the latest Game Ready driver, we incorporated feedback from the community requesting an extension of the limit. As a result, the frame rate limit can be as low as 20 fps and can be raised to 1000 fps," Nvidia explains.

While some games already allow this, Nvidia's implementation is a system-wide setup for 3D applications. One of the main potential benefits is extended battery life when playing games on a laptop. Let's say the refresh rate of the laptop's display is 60 Hz. Capping the frame rate at 60 fps will prevent the GPU from pushing more than necessary.

This can also be used to reduce system latency by staying within the variable refresh rate range of the display, whether it is a laptop or desktop system.

"Enable maximum frame rate and set the power management mode to 'maximum performance first' to reduce latency. In this mode, the GPU is kept at a high frequency to process frames as quickly as possible. Mode to Ultra," explains Nvidia.

The "Max Frame Rate" setting is located in the "Manage 3D Settings" section of the Nvidia Control Panel. It is off by default. If you have not yet updated to the 442.19 driver release and are running an earlier version, the slider will go from 40fps to 240fps.

In addition to more flexible frame rate limits, the 442.19 driver has been optimized for Zombie Army 4: Dead War, Metro Exodus: Sam's Story, and Apex Legends: Season 4. In addition, Asus VG259QM, Dell AW 2521HF, and LG 34GN850, among several more G-Sync-enabled displays.

Besides, there are the usual bug fixes. Here are some of them:
