Early Access RTS "A Year of Rain" Cancelled

It's unfortunately not a great time to be itching for a new real-time strategy. Last week's release of "Warcraft 3: Reforged" as well as the charming co-op RTS "A Year of Rain" have been put on hold.

On Tuesday, the development team notified the community that it had to scrap future plans and shut down the servers.

"The low player count you have witnessed is a huge blow to us. 'We have not reached more than 5,000 players worldwide until today. Considering that we are an independent studio with limited resources, we deeply apologize to everyone who has felt or will feel disappointed in us and the path we have had to choose." [The last part is a bit odd, since A Year of Rain is developed and published by Daedalic Entertainment. [Yesterday's final update changed the matchmaking system to a P2P system. Leaderboards and player stats have also been lost. The planned pathfinding update was also scrapped.

However, a new mode was introduced along with a new map, which the team warns is rough.

"The new content is nowhere near the normal level of quality we set as our own hurdle, but we believe they shouldn't be held back and we really wanted to share what several team members have spent the past two years working on.

When this game was announced last year, I had my doubts that a massively multiplayer RTS could make headway; Daedalic also touted esports talent, saying it would be "esports-ready" at launch, but that would require a number of players and and A Year of Rain unfortunately failed to match it.

Now that the last hotfix has been released, let's take a look at the final patch notes.
