Steam and CS:GO set records for concurrent users

Steam has once again set a record for concurrent users in just one week.

On Sunday, February 9 at 14:10 GMT, 19,107,803 people simultaneously logged into Steam, blowing away the previous record of 18,801,944 set on February 2. The record prior to February 2 was set in January 2018, so for Steam's user count record is unprecedented.

This surge in players also saw Counter-Strike: Global Offensive break its own concurrent player record in just two days; at about the same time that Steam broke its record on February 9, CS:GO broke its all-time record of 901,651 players. record.

The reason for this upward user trend is not entirely clear, but industry analyst Daniel Ahmad believes it may be related to the current coronavirus outbreak.

There are an estimated 30 million Steam accounts in China, with Simplified Chinese being the second most popular language on the platform after English. Given that large parts of China are currently blockaded and quarantined due to the coronavirus, it makes sense that many of these users are trying to pass the time by gaming.

Given this, it may be unlikely that this record will be broken anytime soon; Valve is currently preparing for the release of Steam China, which will feature only 40 of Steam's 30,000 games for Chinese government It is a sanitized version of the client. Assuming that this client will record numbers separately from Steam's main client, its launch may prove to be the end of record-breaking for the foreseeable future.
