Asus has added new hardware options to its ROG Huracan G21 series of compact gaming desktops, offering more choices for faster CPUs and GPUs than ever before. On paper, it has the potential to be one of the best gaming PCs available. However, we'll reserve judgment until we review it in person.
On the CPU front, the refreshed Huracan G21CX line offers three options: the Core i9-9900K (8 cores/16 threads, 3.6GHz-5GHz, 16MB L3 cache), the Core i7-9700K (8 cores/8 threads, 3. 6GHz to 4.9GHz, 12MB L3 cache), and Core i5-9400 (6 cores/6 threads, 2.9GHz to 4.1GHz, 9MB L3 cache).
These are all 9th generation parts based on Intel's Coffee Lake architecture. Incidentally, Intel is expected to roll out a lineup of Comet Lake processors with up to 10 cores and 20 threads in the near future, which will be a further refinement of the company's 14nm node (as opposed to the eventual launch of 10nm desktop CPUs).
For graphics and gaming, new GPU options include Nvidia's GeForce RTX 2080, 2070, and 2060. According to the specifications page, these are the regular versions, not the supermodel versions.
Besides being relatively compact (and more powerful), the Huracan is designed to be easily upgradeable.
"To prepare for future battles, both side panels slide open to reveal internal components for easy access when upgrading to the latest hardware. Upgrading to a more powerful graphics card, a larger storage drive, or simply adding RAM will keep your gaming rig up to date. There's even a hot-swap 2.5" SSD bay that can be removed and replaced in seconds," Asus explains.
The Huracan supports up to 32GB of DDR4-2666 memory. There are two M.2 slots for storage, one of which is occupied by a Wi-Fi adapter. The other is free for an M.2 SSD (NVMe or SATA). It also has two 2.5" drive bays and one 3.5" bay.
Ports on the front consist of two USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A and one USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C. On the back are two USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A ports and four USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports.
Asus does not list a price, but Amazon has a model with a Core i9-9900K CPU, GeForce RTX 2070 GPU, 32GB RAM, and 1TB SSD for $2,799.99.
