Crytek has joined the ranks of game studios raising funds for fire relief in Australia with the release of the Fire Fight DLC for Hunt: Showdown. The package includes two weapons inspired by 1890s New Orleans firefighters: the "Algiers Phoenix" heavy knife and the "Sparks LRR" carbonized rifle, symbolizing resilience against the destructive power of fire.
"The New Orleans Fire Department began in April 1829 when a group of men organized a volunteer fire department called the Fire Benevolent Association; after 62 years of volunteer service, the New Orleans Fire Department became a paid fire department in 1891.
"In October 1895, a fire that broke out in a tenement house consumed much of the Algiers neighborhood on the west side of New Orleans. Horse-drawn fire trucks rushed to extinguish the fire but were unable to stop it from spreading. In memory of these historic firefighting efforts, we tip our hats and dedicate these two new items to the firefighters who are still working tirelessly across Australia today."
That New Orleans fire also sparked a massive philanthropic effort (and a lynch mob that indirectly caused three deaths and 20 injuries, but that's another story entirely), and according to Nola.com, a relief committee formed by citizens to homeless and provided food and shelter, ultimately raising about $16,000 (equivalent to about $457,000 today) for the victims.
The Fire Fight DLC sells for $8/£6/€8 and all proceeds through March 31 will go to Wires, Australia's largest wildlife rescue organization; according to the Wires website, the organization received over 20,000 calls in December alone, up 14% from the previous year, According to the Wires website, the organization received more than 20,000 calls in December alone, up 14% from the previous year, and volunteers rescued more than 3,300 cases.
You may be surprised to see that this charity DLC has received "mixed" user reviews on Steam. Apparently, the recent 1.2 update changed some unique item IDs, causing some players to not be able to access the DLC after purchase due to corrupted profiles and previously unlocked items appearing as locked. A rollback fixed the problem (affecting "Destiny 2"), but the angry negative reviews remain.
"We want to assure players that purchased DLC will be provided as soon as a fixed version is available," Crytek explained in an update. The following week, all players who played between the release and rollback of Update 1.2 will be compensated."
