Some of the best gaming laptops can cost upwards of $1,000, but you can still bring home a high-performance system if you want to keep it in the three-figure range. For example, Newegg has an Asus TUF gaming laptop with a Ryzen 5 3550H processor and GeForce GTX 1660 Ti for $809.99 right now.
This is $110 less than the list price. With the discount, it compares favorably to the latest gaming laptops in the $500-$1,000 category. For example, we recently featured a $999 HP Omen laptop with the same GPU. In many cases, the GTX 1660 Ti is found in laptops priced higher than that.
So why is this GPU so low-priced, as AMD and its hardware partners prepare to roll out laptops powered by the company's recently announced mobile Ryzen 4000 series CPUs? If so, we can expect to see several deals on models with Ryzen 3000 series CPUs, and this is one of them.
The Ryzen 5 3550H is a 4-core/8-thread CPU with a base clock of 2.1 GHz and a maximum boost clock of 3.7 GHz. It also has onboard Vega 8 graphics, but there is no need to use them here; the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti has much more graphics capability.
I don't find 8GB of RAM appealing, but at this price you could upgrade to 16GB and still lead the game. On the storage side, a 512GB NVMe SSD is a welcome addition at this price point.
