Coronavirus exacerbates Oculus Quest shortage, which is dragging it down

As Andy Kelly wrote last month, the wireless Oculus Quest has made me love virtual reality again. Unfortunately, supply shortages continue. In addition, Facebook is anticipating long delays in getting enough shipments out the door due to the Covid-19 coronavirus.

"The Oculus Quest is in high demand and has sold out in some areas. Nevertheless, like other companies, we expect the coronavirus to have an additional impact on our hardware production. We are taking precautions to ensure the safety of our employees, manufacturing partners and customers and are monitoring the situation closely. We are working to restore availability as quickly as possible," Facebook said in a statement.

Facebook made this statement about two weeks ago, and the situation has not changed much since then; speaking to USA Today, Facebook product manager Sean Liu described the coronavirus as "a wrinkle that all companies are facing." He described it as "a wrinkle that all companies face.

The shortage of Quest headsets is a major disappointment. One of the reasons this device is exciting is that it is a completely self-contained VR solution. Because of this, it can be taken anywhere, which Andy found "very liberating."

Portability doesn't come at the expense of crappy hardware or features either; the Quest has an OLED display with a resolution of 2880x1600, an improvement over the Rift S's 2560x1440. There is also the option to purchase a Link cable so that the headset can be connected to a PC to play Rift games, if needed.

The Quest is priced at $399 for the 64GB model and $499 for the 128GB model. However, the only way to get one now is to buy one from a used seller at a higher price. For example, a marketplace seller on Walmart's website lists the 64GB model for $577.60, and Amazon has similar pricing.

Even ordering on the Quest product page is no longer possible. I last checked in December, and at the time Facebook was predicting that new orders would be available in late February. Now the buttons to buy either model are grayed out and marked "Unavailable." Terrible.
