Original Article Internet connectivity is an important part of the PC gaming experience, and your router is just as important as your ISP's advertised speed. The right gaming router can make the difference between falling behind or gaining an edge in online gaming, and one of Linksys' top models is currently on sale.
The Netgear Nighthawk AX12 went on sale last year for a whopping $499.99. That's too high a price for any router, unless you're in a warehouse with hundreds of PCs streaming Netflix simultaneously. Netgear quickly realized this and the router quickly dropped to around $400 and is now being sold by Amazon-owned Woot for $299.99.
The router supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz connections. The former can reach speeds of up to 1.2 Gbps and the latter up to 4.8 Gbps. It also supports many new standards that are just beginning to become common, including Wi-Fi 6, WPA3 network security, and 8x8 MU-MIMO data streaming. These allow newer PCs (or wireless cards) to get the best speeds, but also work well with older devices. There are also five Ethernet ports on the back for wired connections, four 1 Gbps and one 6 Gbps. [The Nighthawk AX12 also has some nice software features, including integration with Amazon's Alexa voice assistant, parental controls with website filters, optional guest networking, and two USB 3.0 ports for connecting drives Yes, this is a NAS router. Yes, this router can also function as a NAS.
While we did not review this particular model ourselves, this router received good reviews from other outlets; PCMag called it "a solid choice for users looking to step up to 802.11ax." Most of the criticism of this router stemmed from its initially high price, but that is apparently less of an issue now.
