Crytek and "Star Citizen" developer agree to settle lawsuit.

Crytek's increasingly complex lawsuit against Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games appears to be over. The two companies have agreed to settle the dispute, notified the court to that effect, and requested 30 days for final resolution.

The legal battle stemmed from an agreement over the use of CryEngine, which CIG claimed it broke when it used CryEngine in another game, Squadron 42. CIG responded that Squadron 42 is the same as Star Citizen It countered that it is not actually a separate game, since it can be accessed through the same client. It also switched from CryEngine to Amazon's Lumberyard.

How Squadron 42 will be released, however, is undecided; CIG apparently told Crytek last November that they had not settled on this important detail. In the same document, Crytek also disputed the fact that "Squadron 42" had switched to a new engine, and CIG "was forced to confirm during this litigation that no such switch had taken place."

In January, it was revealed that Crytek intended to file another lawsuit after the release of "Squadron 42" in an attempt to have its own lawsuit dismissed. Since the lawsuit hinged on "Squadron 42" being released as a stand-alone game, with no firm release date and an unclear relationship to "Star Citizen," Crytek wanted to delay the situation; CIG fought back, calling the court documents "attention-grabbing."

They called them.

After so long and so much gunfire, an agreement seemed particularly unlikely, but it appears that the lawsuit has been settled, or at least will be settled soon; documents found on Reddit do not specify details of the agreement, only confirming that it has been reached.

Crytek first filed the lawsuit in 2017, so it has been going on for some time, though not as long as the development of Star Citizen. It began in 2011. At the time, some of us thought we would be playing the finished game in a few years. We excitedly await the final release.
