PUBG is dealing with increased DDoS attacks and performance issues.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has been a bit of a bumpy ride in recent months, as evidenced by the tone of the Steam forums and subreddits, which have been flooded with posts complaining about crashes, stuttering, and cheats. Some of the problems started in Season 6, while others date back to last year.

PUBG Corp has addressed these issues in an update detailing the reasons for the problems and plans to fix them. The developers have already "mostly resolved" the arcade team deathmatch issues, but it appears there is still much work to be done. Performance issues have been increasing since January and are still ongoing and apparently difficult to identify.

"The difficulty is that some of these problems affect specific hardware or occur in special situations that are difficult to reproduce. To remedy a performance problem, you need to pinpoint the specific cause, which often means you need to reproduce the specific steps that lead to the problem."

PUBG has also been the victim of an increase in DDoS attacks, the frequency of which rose to an all-time high in November and is rising again this month. To address this issue, PUBG Corp conducted several tests, which resulted in even more performance problems.

"While testing various DDoS protection solutions provided by outside infrastructure providers, our servers were often located far from their standard locations, resulting in increased pings and other network issues for some players." He explains." In addition, many players have suffered from constant packet loss problems due to the experimental DDoS defense solutions deployed by these providers."

He explains.

We didn't want the attackers to know what we were doing, so we kept the players in the dark. At the very least, the impact of DDoS attacks has been reduced by nearly 85%.

Players have also reported that the custom match presets have not been working properly since the last patch. This issue has not been completely resolved, but saved presets should work. Several other custom match bugs have also been fixed.

As for cheating, PUBG Corp will provide more details on their plans in a community letter and roadmap post next month. Currently, PUBG Corp is using multiple internal teams and "outside resources" to fight cheating, which is one of the studio's top priorities.

Despite a troubling few months, PUBG continues to be one of the most popular games on Steam; according to SteamDB, the average concurrent player count actually rose in November and December, but has fallen this year. 2018 has regularly peaked above 1 million players. but has been steadily declining. Still, an average of 300,000 is quite healthy.
