Bungie to Disable Artifact Power in Destiny 2's Trials of Osiris Following Player Backlash

The impending return of Trials of Osiris sent the Destiny 2 community into a frenzy. The reason players were outraged was because in an announcement this week, Bungie pointed out that power levels would be enabled. Basically this means that higher level players will do more damage and take less damage when playing against lower level opponents.

Power was also enabled in the original mode when it first appeared in Destiny 1, but because of the different level mechanics at the time, the maximum you could outperform your opponent in 3vs3 PvP mode was effectively limited. However, this is no longer the case in the current Destiny 2 due to the presence of seasonal artifacts.

With this artifact, you can grind past the hard power limit to an infinite level (which is reset each season when the artifact is replaced and reset). When it was confirmed that the seasonal artifact would be applied to the trial, the player base was up in arms. This is because it effectively means that players who are willing to grind endlessly through PvE content for power levels will, quite simply, have an advantage in PvP over players who are actually better.

In a major mode that focuses on high skill play, it is an understandable concern; one user on reddit put it succinctly: the World Championship of Chess said, 'screw it, let's add new rules to the game. Let's say you can get up and knock out your opponent whenever you want. And if your opponent loses consciousness, you win!'"

In short, "You win!

In short, even a below-average player can benefit from great power and beat much more skilled players if he or she can afford to spend hundreds of hours to earn the prize money. And that goes against the main purpose of this mode.

Thankfully, and somewhat surprisingly, Bungie withdrew this idea before the mode was launched. Game director Luke Smith said on Twitter, "We will be disabling artifacts in power-enabled PVP (Iron Banner & Trial) until we implement the power cap feature." This cap will allow Artifact and Power Pursuit to be interwoven while preventing unbounded Power growth in PVP." He added that Bungie will further elaborate on how Power will affect PvP combat at a later date.

In other news, Bungie announced weekly updates, explained a bit more about the upcoming Trials, and stated the changes to subclasses.
