AMD begins to fix black screen problem with Radeon RX 5000 series

AMD's driver team is attempting to address various issues (including reports of black screens popping up in certain situations) raised by community members in support forums and places like Reddit. The new Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition (20.2.2) driver release fixes some, but not all, of these issues.

"While many black screen issues have been resolved in Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.2.2, AMD recognizes that some users may experience black screen and system hang issues during extended game play AMD will continue to closely monitor and investigate reports of these issues," AMD stated.

It is not yet clear why AMD is struggling to address these situations. It could be a combination of causes, including poor cooling of certain cards. For example, Asus recently replaced the heatsink mounting screws used on some ROG Strix Radeon RX 5700 XT and 5700 cards to apply more pressure to the GPU. This was done in response to complaints of high card temperatures.

However, the problem may be more deep-seated. Several threads and social media posts have been made by owners, primarily of the Radeon RX 5000 series, complaining of encountering black screen issues in a variety of situations, although AMD's latest GPU drivers address five specific black screen scenarios, noted that it is not a panacea for the problem.

In all, there are two dozen bug fixes. Those related to the blackscreen bug are:

While AMD acknowledges that further work is needed, it points out one specific scenario where the blackscreen problem exists and will not be fixed in this driver release.

"Enhanced Sync can cause black screens when enabled in some games and system configurations. Enhanced Sync has been temporarily disabled from the gaming profile and users who may experience issues with Enhanced Sync enabled should disable it as a temporary workaround," AMD stated.
