League of Legends' notorious client gets a revamp

To put it mildly, people don't seem to like League of Legends clients. So it is welcome news that Riot Games has announced a "client cleanup campaign."

The campaign seems to be quite thorough, with Riot's announcement admitting that the client is "not in very good shape. Bugs, lag, memory leaks, crashes, and freezes are cited as the biggest concerns, and indeed they are all very significant and troublesome problems.

A fairly lengthy post provides a lot of data. But the most important point is this: the "specific long-term goal" is to reduce boost trap time (the time it takes for a client to start up) to about 15 seconds, which Riot claims is "three or four times faster" than today. Meanwhile, Champion Select's lock-in response time should be about eight times faster.

Neither, however, is a bug per se, but there is a method to Riot's madness. For "in the process of addressing bootstrap time and champion select lock-in time, we will be reorganizing and restructuring fundamental aspects of our client's architecture. We believe we can be resourceful in dealing with bugs, memory leaks, and crashes while pursuing these goals."
