C-Sonic Develops PSUs for Cable Management Concerns

The advent of modular power supply units is a godsend for PC builders who like to keep their systems tidy, but why stop there, when Seasonic has chosen not to, finally bringing the cleverly designed PSU first shown off at Computex 2018 to market.

Initially called a SCMD (System Cable Management Device), the new Seasonic Connect comes with "basically a backplane that attaches magnetically to the PC case." the main 24-pin power cable coming from the PSU is attached to this accessory and the rest can basically be plugged into a hub.

In essence, Seasonic relocated the modular connectors from the PSU itself to a backplane behind the motherboard tray (see image above). The cables are then snaked from the back of the case to the front, possibly through cable cutouts (depending on the case).

This is a neat idea, but its overall practicality depends on the case used and how good (or bad) you are at cable management. Many modern cases use a chamber design that hides the PSU (and its cables) inside a barrier at the bottom of the chassis.

Still, Connect makes it easy to reach places where it is not possible to snake cables from the back of the motherboard tray to the front: 8-pin/4-pin auxiliary CPU cables come to mind. These connectors are often located in the upper left corner of the motherboard, and depending on your choice of PSU and case, may not be long enough to run the cable from the back to the front.

Clever accessories aside, Connect is a 750W PSU with 80 Plus Gold certification. It comes with a main 24-pin connector, two 8-pin/4-pin EPS12 connectors, four 8-pin/6-pin PCIe connectors, eight SATA connectors, three 4-pin peripheral connectors, and two SATA-to-Molex adapters. 135mm fans provide cooling.

Seasonic did not say when the Connect would be available for purchase or at what price. However, it stated that it comes with a 10-year warranty.
