Acer Launches 240Hz IPS Gaming Monitor

Acer appears poised to release a pair of Predator gaming monitors that combine a fast 240-Hz refresh rate with an IPS screen. Such a combination of speed and IPS color quality is rare in the monitor field, with only a handful of IPS models capable of refreshing screens at 240Hz. A few years ago, 144Hz IPS panels were a major breakthrough.

The caveat with 240Hz is that you need a powerful graphics card that can handle it. Displays with high refresh rates are especially useful for low-load games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and League of Legends.

When using an IPS screen, this type of panel usually offers better image quality than less expensive TN screens. A wider color gamut and more flexible viewing angles are both staples of IPS monitors (as well as VA).

Acer has posted product pages for two new monitors, the 24.5-inch Predator XB253QGX bmiiprzx and the 27-inch Predator XB273GX bmiiprzx. The specifications of both models are nearly identical, though not exactly the same. Here is an overview of the 24.5" model:

And here is an overview of the 27" model:

Both are 1080p displays. I would love to see 1440p resolution on the larger 27" panel, but perhaps something like that is being planned. That said, 1080p is less graphically demanding, especially when trying to get 240 fps.

Also, both of these are labeled G-Sync Certified. This means that Nvidia has tested and certified them to work in G-Sync mode, and the setting is automatically enabled; adaptive sync monitors that are not G-Sync certified may still be able to run G-Sync, but in the absence of certification, GeForce GPU owners must go into the GeForce control panel and toggle the switch themselves and hope for the best.

Connection options are also the same on both models, consisting of one DisplayPort 1.2a input and two HDMI 2.0b inputs. Additionally, there is a 3.5mm audio output and a built-in 4-port USB 3.0 hub.

At this time, the product page is only available on Acer's portal site; according to our friends at Anandtech, the 24.5-inch model is expected to sell for 46,000 yen (about $450) and the 27-inch model for 55,000 yen (about $540).

However, prices can (and often do) vary by region, so we'll have to see what the suggested retail prices will be in the US, Europe, and elsewhere. For reference, the Asus TUF VG279QM is a 27-inch 1080p monitor with an IPS screen and a refresh rate of 280 Hz (overclocked from 240 Hz) that sells for $399 on Amazon in the US and £360.27 in Europe.
