Frontier Developments, developer of "Planet Coaster" and "Elite," has announced a multi-year game licensing deal with Formula 1.
The license gives the studio exclusive rights to develop management games using the Formula 1 brand. Four games are currently planned, with the first to be released during the 2022 F1 season.
Frontier is best known for its management simulation games such as Planet Coaster and Jurassic World Evolution. In its latest title, "Planet Zoo," you are tasked with taking care of a zoo full of animals, sometimes with cruel consequences. As Chris states in his review of Planet Zoo, "It's not just a management simulation, it's a survival game. [Jurassic World Evolution] had a Velociraptor attack, and Planet Zoo had a depressed panda. One of Frontier's greatest strengths is its ability to introduce unexpected elements into the management game. While it is unlikely that Dino will go on a rampage at the Red Bull Ring, it is not unreasonable to expect some creative surprises.
F1 may seem a bit esoteric to those who have never watched the race, but Frank Arthofer, director of F1 digital licensing, says the new management series will be "as accessible as possible to a wide audience." Frontier's other management games are quite accessible, so hopefully this one will be too.
Frontier also announced that it has signed two more third-party publishing deals for its new Frontier Publishing label, which will launch in June 2019.
