Take a look at the new screenshots of Spelunky 2.

Things have been fairly quiet on the Spelunky 2 front since it was first announced in 2017. Last year, Mossmouth's Derek Yu explained that development was taking so long due to the "density and detail of the game" that it stopped arriving in 2019. No release date has been set yet, but Yu shared some new screenshots and progress via the PlayStation Blog.

Yu wants each run of "Spelunky 2" to feel like a unique adventure, and Mossmouth is adding items that have obvious interactions and those that don't. The screenshots will give you a good idea of just the visual variations.

Recently, Mossmouth has been refining the visuals of Spelunky 2. The "graphics are crisp and easy to parse, but the details still stand out enough that you can easily absorb them while playing the game. Lighting, liquid and other effects are also more vibrant, contributing to the sense of a dynamic, living world, which has been our goal since day one."

Each area also has its own musical theme, and every creature, surface, and item has a different sound effect. Says Yu, "Landing on the grass in the jungle will sound very different than landing on a conveyor belt in Volcana." Mosmas is now trying to expand the deathmatch mode and bring it on par with the adventure mode.

No release date has been set yet, but Yu says it is "getting closer and closer."
