A pair of Spanish soccer players played in a FIFA 20 match between Real Betis and Sevilla after the game was cancelled due to the coronavirus.

The match was scheduled to kick off last Sunday, but the country was sealed off a few days earlier, so fans were unable to watch the game as a distraction. Instead, Borja Iglesias of Real Betis and Sergio Leguillon of Sevilla hosted the match at the FIFA 20.

Over 60,000 people watched the stream, many goals were scored, and Real Betis ultimately prevailed. Nevertheless, it was a close game, 6-5. It can be viewed below.

As Eurogamer noted, this is not the first soccer match to be replaced by a simulation since the coronavirus outbreak, but the participation of two real players brought it a little closer to the real thing. Not enough to make the match count, but at least it gave fans something to get excited about.

Online events have filled many of the gaps created during the outbreak: the GDC 2020 talks and IGF awards were streamed, and publishers are planning their own digital events to replace E3. Social distance and isolation have made the Internet an even more valuable resource, but unfortunately, not everyone has easy access to it at home.
