Overwatch League schedule to undergo major changes for online-only play

Last week, the Overwatch League canceled all live events until at least May due to the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak. Today, the League revealed an updated schedule.

The new schedule is intended to minimize latency issues by eliminating the need for travel and matching teams from similar regions; Blizzard says the new schedule "takes into account the total amount of games played each week and maximizes equity among teams It is designed," but because Pacific Conference teams "generally" play more frequently than Atlantic Conference teams, all teams will catch up to their scheduled number of matches by midseason.

"The original 2020 schedule was balanced so that teams would play teams from their own conference twice (18 of 28 games) and teams from other conferences once (10 of 28 games). The schedule no longer follows that breakdown as teams play each other regionally," Blizzard explained.

"Some teams play two or more games against other teams, while others do not. The league is currently considering changes to the structure of the 2020 playoffs (including format and qualifiers) to account for this change."

"The league is also considering changes to the schedule for the 2020 playoffs.

Matches will be played on the map set in the image below, using the new hero pool selection process. The new weekly schedule can be viewed in full at overwatchleague.com.
