Blizzard Investigating Battle.net Issues and DDoS Attacks

Battle.net became a bit unstable Tuesday evening. Some players reported being disconnected from the game, while others were unable to log in fully; Blizzard announced that it is investigating some issues, but it is unclear if they have been resolved.

Call of Duty: Warzone players in particular seem to be reporting a lot of problems, which probably has something to do with how many players there are now. The battle royale just launched last week and attracted 15 million players in a matter of days.

Blizzard's North American support team said they are investigating issues affecting the authentication servers and have warned players of login problems.

A few hours later, another tweet was sent out, informing players that delays and connections to Battle.net games were being affected by a DDoS attack and the team was monitoring it.

The tweet did not mention the connection between the two issues, despite their proximity to each other, and has not been updated since; support accounts in other regions, such as the EU, have not reported any problems and Battle.net appears to be working fine. However, according to Downdetector, there have been outages worldwide.

Server problems and other technical issues are likely exacerbated by the coronavirus outbreak; Blizzard implemented a telecommuting policy in Irvine and Austin on March 14, and support Twitter accounts are experiencing increased wait times and live chat and noted that it could cause restrictions on phone support.

With more people staying home, more people are playing games, putting additional strain on servers, and interruptions seem inevitable; for the second month in a row, Steam's concurrent user record was broken, with 20 million people using the platform simultaneously, of which 6.2 million people are using it in-game.
