The cancellation of GDC was a big blow to indie game developers. This is because they depend on events like the Indie Mega Booth and Day of the Devs to showcase their new work. To combat that loss, Geoff Keighley and Steam will host the Steam Game Festival: Spring Edition to spotlight new and upcoming games that missed their big chance to shine.

Steam's first Game Festival was held in December 2019 in conjunction with The Game Awards, offering users "first look game demos" of a dozen games for a limited time. The spring edition will be much larger, with more than 40 games to be showcased.
