AMD and Nvidia update GPU drivers in time for Doom Eternal

"Doom Eternal" is one heck of a game that left James "anxious and fatigued."

Whether you have a Radeon or GeForce graphics card, you can update it.

First, AMD has begun distributing the Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.3.1 release. It is not WHQL certified yet, so technically it is a beta release, but if you are waiting for something certified, you may have to wait until Doom Eternal is released tomorrow.

According to AMD, the 20.3.1 driver provides up to a 5% performance improvement over the previous 20.2.2 driver in Doom Eternal (Ultra Nightmare setting) at 1080p on a Radeon RX 5700 XT. This is not a huge jump, but it is better than nothing.

AMD states that in addition to Doom Eternal, the latest driver is also optimized for Half-Life: Alyx (remember, this is a VR-only game) and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint (when using the Vulkan API).

This release has been optimized for the "Alyx" (remember, this is a VR-only game) and "Ghost Recon: Breakpoint" (when using Vulkan API).

A number of issues have been fixed in this release. They include:

AMD appears to be working on resolving some black screen and stuttering issues affecting the Radeon RX 5000 series. 20.3.1 release is available from AMD's Radeon software utility or download from AMD's drivers page.

As for Nvidia, its new 442.74 driver is WHQL certified and focuses only on Doom Eternal, at least as it relates to performance tweaks. This is a so-called "Game Ready" driver release.

"Game Ready drivers provide the best gaming experience for all major new releases," Nvidia said, "Before a new title is released, our driver team works to ensure that every performance tweak and bug fix is included to give you the best gameplay experience from day one. We are working right up to the last minute to make sure it includes all the performance tweaks and bug fixes to ensure the best possible gameplay from day one."

The list of issues that have been fixed is relatively short. In fact, there is only one problem that has been resolved. The driver wipes out a bug that was causing games to display a black screen after switching windows using Alt+Tab.

There are several known issues (currently unresolved), some of which apply to Doom Eternal: those affecting Windows 7 are:

And known issues affecting Windows 10 are:

You can download the latest GPU drivers from Nvidia through GeForce Experience or manually from Nvidia's driver page.
