Call of Duty: Warzone has surpassed 30 million players in a little over a week. However, these are sales, and Warzone players can play for free.

Free-to-play has undoubtedly contributed to the huge player numbers, which are nearly identical to Apex Legends' current numbers; Apex Legends had 25 million players in its first week and 50 million in its first month.

It would not be surprising if Warzone continues on this trajectory or if Apex has the upper hand by the end of the first month. With the Call of Duty name behind it, it could tempt veteran CoD players who have never been interested in battle royale before.

Warzone's relentlessly boring maps quickly turned me off, but they managed to surprise Morgan Park, who has become a fan of Warzone's streamlined loot. No more fiddling around with rucksacks and inventory, instead only letting you pick up items with available equipment slots, which are then instantly added to your loadout. Respawning is also novel.
