Among Trees" is a fascinating survival sandbox that will be available in Early Access this summer

Among Trees may seem too gentle to be a survival game, but even the most welcoming wilderness can be dangerous if you forget to fill your belly or wander into a cave full of small, hungry animals. These are two of the things you need to worry about when you move into your new cabin in the woods this summer.

First announced in 2018, "Along Trees" was slated for an Early Access release last year, but updates were sparse and the Early Access version never appeared. In January, however, a Twitter account confirmed that the game is still in development, but that game development is "long and unpredictable."

A release date has not yet been set, but it is expected to be available this summer on the Epic Games Store. It has not yet been revealed what the early access version will include, but it sounds like you will be able to grow plants, catch fish, cook food, and take walks in the woods.

The system seems to be standard survival, but the atmosphere is anything but conventional. It is cozy and peaceful, the kind of place one would choose to live in rather than just be left behind. There are shades of "The Long Dark" in the mechanics of survival and the dangerous animals and other threats that emerge as the sun sets, but it is also reminiscent of "Firewatch" and other walking sims.

In addition to exploring the forest and scavenging for food and craft materials, you can also improve your rustic home. In most survival games, you are forced to build a house, but in this game, it seems that you can quickly get a roof over your head and add new rooms for crafting and cooking.

The ability to own a home and explore a pristine forest that seems untouched by human hands is quite appealing. You can head to the forest when it launches on the Epic Games Store this summer, but there is also a Steam page, so it will eventually make its way there as well.
