Doom Eternal's HDR is hell.

Doom Eternal's HDR is hell.

Doom Eternal was released and shipped without real-time ray tracing support, but the developers have implemented an HDR toggle. The only problem is that HDR seems to be partially broken at the moment.

Reddit has a growing thread on the topic. The main issue concerns AMD graphics hardware. Several users have reported error messages when trying to enable HDR on their Radeon GPUs.

"Notice: AMD graphics drivers do not currently support HDR; AMD is actively working to resolve these issues.

Apparently the error message started appearing two days ago. Interestingly, Bethesda posted a support article five days ago indicating that AMD GPU owners need to install the latest driver package to enable HDR.

"Doom Eternal's official release driver (20.3.1) is required to run the game in HDR display mode on an AMD GPU and on a compatible monitor," Bethesda stated.

The Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.3.1 driver release is the latest driver available from AMD and the first driver to offer optimizations specific to Doom Eternal.

The release notes also point out a known issue with HDR in general, stating that "intermittent corruption may occur on the desktop or in-game when HDR is enabled." Nevertheless, several people on Reddit claim that the error message still appears even after installing the latest drivers.

"It happens with the 5700 XT and the latest optional drivers," one user stated.

"Ditto; I filed a ticket with Bethesda.

Other users claim to be experiencing HDR-related bugs with Nvidia hardware. While they do not receive error messages, they complain that their displays flicker when they turn HDR off and on, and that their maps darken when HDR is enabled. One user claims to have experienced better performance with HDR enabled, which is odd.
