Final Fantasy 14" won't kick you out of your in-game home, even in a Coronavirus pandemic

"Final Fantasy 14" will freeze residential evictions so that players do not have to worry about their virtual property during a pandemic of the Coronavirus, the developer announced yesterday.

"In light of the global spread of COVID-19 and the economic impact of various cities being sealed off, we have decided to temporarily suspend automatic residential demolitions," a blog post on the Final Fantasy 14 website reads.

This is good news for the lucky few players who own homes in Final Fantasy 14. Normally, players must enter their homes at least once every 30 days or risk having them torn down and the land sold to another player. This is because housing in Final Fantasy 14 is very scarce and only a limited number of plots are supplied per server. Owning a home is therefore a huge (and very expensive) responsibility, and players usually share it with their entire guild. However, despite the surge in Internet use and people isolating themselves, players do not have to worry about losing their in-game homes if they cannot play.

It's an unexpectedly generous move by Square Enix, and hopefully real-world governments will follow suit as more people lose their jobs due to COVID-19. Across North America, there is growing pressure to temporarily suspend rent and mortgage payments to deal with the economic hit of the epidemic. Even the Cheesecake Factory can't pay its rent.

As for your Final Fantasy 14 home, it is safe for now. Square Enix will "monitor the situation closely" over the next few days to determine when evictions will resume.
