Doom Eternal" speedrun world record, under 40 minutes

Today Speedrun.com launched its Doom Eternal speedrun rankings, and even though Eternal has only been on the market for 10 days, the early results are staggering. The current world record is 39 minutes and 50 seconds (without loading screens) operating Distortion2. Normally this is a 15-hour game.

A few things to note: this is not a glitchless run. Speedrunners in this category are not worried about proving themselves in all arenas of the highest difficulty. They still use great arena control and weapon-switching skills, and their aim is great, but this is about destroying the Doom Eternal in a big way, and there were already many cracks in the underground nest. The majority of these plays involve floating above each level and using weapon damage glitches to completely cut out the toughest enemies.

Efficiency dominates these early runs regardless of cost, but that doesn't make them any less impressive; the Distortion2 recordings are below. Jump to some of the more impressive moves with time stamps.

1:36 - A well-used wepon wheel glitch, the first time Distortion2 is seen pushing upward and over most of the map.

13:06 - Distortion2 jumps several times, easily ending Cultist Base.

18:34 - Doom Guy breaks through the floor with a chainsaw kill and Distortion2 pushes through the forbidden geometry of the Super Gore Nest with a ballista.

23:30 - Distortion 2 defeats Marauder by taking advantage of a weapon glitch that causes extreme damage to chain gun rockets.

32:00 - Geometry spelunking begins on Sentinel Prime.

35:30 - Nekravol is beautiful from this high up.

38:31 - Distortion 2 sails over Uldak and finally goes straight to the boss.

And this is just the beginning; according to Distortion2's run description, their world record was not bad, but runners are always unearthing new tricks and expect to see slimmer times in the near future. That, of course, depends on whether id Software will patch the more vicious skips in the coming weeks.

I myself am looking forward to a glitch-free Ultra Nightmare. However, DraQu, the prolific speedrunner of Doom 2016, has already done a great job. He finished Ultra-Nightmare's Doom Eternal without glitches in about 5.5 hours early last week.
