Sandbox, successor to Garry's Mod, appears to have resumed development

Garry Newman, creator of the chaotic indie physics sandbox Garry's Mod, teased "Garry's Mod 2" on Twitter.

He appears to be using the "Distracted Boyfriend" meme to suggest that he is only looking at "Garry's Mod 2," but apparently he is more interested in the mentality of "Garry's Mod," which was announced in 2015, than in announcing a brand new game He seems to be referring to its successor, "Sandbox" (spelled S&Box).

Newman told PCGamesN that the tweet was actually about Sandbox, but it remains good news for Garry's Mod fans. In an interview last December, he said that Sandbox could be something like Garry's Mod 2. Unfortunately, its development has been "paused," and Newman said that if development does not resume in 2020, that game will "probably be dead forever."

So it appears to have come back from the brink, although Newman is still tight-lipped about it on Twitter.

The original Garry's Mod, which celebrated its 15th birthday in December, has held up surprisingly well for its age. Updated regularly (most recently on March 17) and still popular with players, with a top ranking in Steam's Top 100, Sandbox (aka Garry's Mod 2?) appears to be building on the success of the original while addressing the changing gaming landscape since 2004.
